Oneida Community
A Unique and Personal History
The Oneida Community Mansion House in upstate New York, built by the utopian community in the mid-19th century, is an amazing structure: equal parts museum, bed and breakfast, and apartment building. It was a pleasure to help the organization put together a promotional film to highlight its hospitality offerings. As a direct descendant of the Community, I spent lots of summers running around the old place (the video doesn’t feature the serpentine corridors of the basement, which is certainly the highlight for the under-12 set), and it’s always a joy to return.
Once the “property” (and financial drag) on the silver company which sprang from the Community, Oneida Ltd., the Mansion was chartered as a non-profit organization in 1987 with a mission to preserve and proclaim the unique Oneida history. The place has never looked better. If you’re ever near Syracuse, stop in for a visit.
